Discovering Melbourne's Artisan Foods and Produce

Tooborac Pies In Carlton

image_pdfimage_print

Tooborac, situated on the Northern Highway before Heathcote, is famous for its historic bluestone Tooborac hotel and adjacent pie shop. The house made pies have been a hit with visitors to the Heathcote wine region as well as travellers making a strategic pit stop but now those famous pies can be a regular affair for Melbournians with the opening of Tooborac Pies and Beer in Carlton. Tooborac pies are generous, meaty packages full of flavour. I give the rabbit pie (pictured) top marks for being tender and succulent with light as a feather pastry. Tooborac pies come in the following combinations: beef and ale; beef and mushroom; lamb, potato and rosemary; chilli beef; vegetable korma and chicken, leek and bacon. The hefty 400 gram pies can be purchased for takeaway or eaten in with traditional mashed potato, peas and gravy. With the football final coming up I suggest stocking up for a tasty finals lunch.

Tooborac Pies and Beer is located at 139 Elgin Street, in the former Elgin Scrap Metals site. Open 7 days a week.
