Discovering Melbourne's Artisan Foods and Produce

Black Star Pastry Gets Gold Star

Black Star Pastry started in Sydney, serving fruit driven cakes that are not only extremely pretty but delightfully fresh and flavoursome. These cakes are not the dense, super sweet numbers meant for a long shelf life you mostly see around town these days.  Black Star Pastry’s cakes are so fresh that you can see them being made right before your eyes. Lucky for Melbourne they recently opened a pop-up store at 55-56 University Street, Carlton just round the corner from Carlton Espresso in Lygon Street. Hopefully they will open a permanent store in Melbourne soon.  You can buy their famous strawberry and watermelon cake, made with a slab of fresh cut watermelon and sponge cake as well as others made with fresh lychees, raspberries, pistachio, lemon myrtle and a rich chocolate one for chocoholics.  Stop in and watch the assembly process, enjoy a coffee or order online. Cakes are available as individual servings ($8) or in larger format squares for a dinner party right up to multi-tired celebration extravaganzas sans the usual construction strength mud cake and troweled on, inedible icings. Black Star Cakes do look and taste splendid and their opening hours are splendid too. Monday to Saturday, 10 am – 8pm and Sunday, 10am – 5 pm.

Follow-up: Unfortunately Black Star Pastry’s Melbourne outpost did not last, so you will need a trip to Sydney to enjoy these cakes.
