Bakers Still On The Rise

Melbourne’s love affair with bread and pastries continues with two new premises recently opened in inner city locations. Baker Bleu has extended its reach to the North side of the river with a full line up of their bread and pastries on sale at Andrew McConnell’s new providore, Morning Market, at 59 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. Morning Market also has ready made sandwiches and picnic fare you can enjoy in nearby Carlton Gardens as well as ready meals and a small range of grocery items.

Open Tuesday – Sunday 8:30 am – 3:30 pm.

It seems Melbourne urbanites have no problem with queuing for something good and the croissants from Monforte Viennoiserie must be exceptionally good judging from the long line of people snaking around the corner into Canning Street on Friday and Saturday mornings. Monforte Viennoiserie as the name suggests bakes croissants, both sweet and savoury. As well as the plain version expect combinations such as leatherwood honey and sea salt, asparagus and goats cheese and hazelnut pain au chocolat. Open only on Friday and Saturday, Monforte is located at a hole-in-the-wall in Pigdon Street, North Carlton (technically 585a Canning St), formerly the home of Bü coffee. You can’t afford to sleep in because they do sell out quickly.

Open Friday – Saturday 8:30 am – 12:30 pm or until sold out.
